Hi!  I am a 56 year old who had a stroke at the age of 41.  I was supposed to die, but I am still here.  I have been on Social Security disability, but as I have gotten better over these last few years I am finding I really want to make my own way.  I have lots of disabilities because of the stroke.  I only have one working arm, a gimpy leg, I have to watch my step because my leg will go out from underneath me.  My brain doesn't work quite like it used to.  I have some short term memory loss.  I have learned ways around a lot of my disabilities.  And I think I have lots to offer the community, and I want to not be on disability so it's there for others. I have a degree in special ed.  And have worked for crisis lines all my adult life.

I read your note on "GettingHired."  I hope that things go better for you and that your stroke is not too hindering.

I have a blog on "GettingHired," and it it titled "The Poetry of James Magill."

I have multiple physical disabilities and I use a powerchair.  I have no family involved in my life and I am basically alone.  I could use a few friends, and I hope that you chose to write back.

You can search our Service Provider Network here.  Thanks for joining our forum, and please keep in touch, to let us know how your search for employment is going.

Hi modesty, you have been through many struggles recently...my advice to you since you want to go back to work and not be on disability and because you have a degree in special ed..maybe look into some positions within the school districts in your area..I know its almost summer so school will be ending for the tear..but if you look into this possibility you may find something in time for the new school year or maybe even something you can start work for over the summer. Having a college degree in todays society is a big step up in the working world these days, you already have that under your belt..so use it to open possible doors for yourself.

Best of luck to you in the job search

Samantha

Dear Modesty,  Sam has some great advice for you here!  (Thanks, Sam.)

One more thing you might try is to go through the university where you got that special ed degree, or any associations you might have joined while you were in the process of getting that degree.  Often university programs have some job placement organization that can help graduates find work, and the teachers' associations and special education associations may also be helpful.  If you had a favorite professor, it could also be worth contacting that teacher to see if he or she has heard about any job openings that may be particularly suited to your skills and talents.

You can also do a job search using Gettinghired.com. I have done some for you but you will need to put in the city and state where you are located.

Keyword: Teaching

Keyword: Special Education

Good luck, and keep in touch.

Sincerely,

BusyBee
