I am looking for a position as an editor/proofreader/writer in the Las Vegas area. I've been in sales for the last ten years or so, and would like to make a career change. I am wheelchair bound, but commuting is not impossible.
Does anyone else have experience in this field? I would welcome any suggestions. I am experienced. I was a US Navy Journalist, I've worked as an editor/writer for a senior citizens magazine, and I have written letters for marketing companies.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to our web site and our forums.
I have a couple of suggestions. The first is to include writing samples when you apply for writing/editing jobs, so that a future employer can become aware of your talents and your versatility. If you have written for a newsletter, and a magazine, and as a correspondent, then include samples of all the kinds of things you have written to acquaint employers with your various writing styles and the applicability of your talents to a variety of applications.
My second suggestion might be considered rather selfish, but I'll go there anyway: Have you considered starting a blog? We are always looking for bloggers here at GettingHired, and if you wanted to, for example, chronicle your job-seeking experiences for us, we would be thrilled to give you some space on our web site and provide you with a forum! Your topics need not be limited to job-hunting, you can talk aabout virtually anything in a blog, including your experiences coping with your disability, and you'll then be able to point future employers toward your current blog, so they can get to know you and become acquainted with your skills as a writer and editor.
Do think about it, and if you're interested in blogging here at Gettinghired.com, then you can message me by clicking on my name, BusyBee, and finding the "Start a Conversation" link on the right hand side toolbar.
No matter what you decide to do about blogging, good luck to you, and keep us posted about your progress.
Sincerely, BusyBee
Hi,
Just came across this site today for people with physical impairments.
http://www.lift-inc.org
They have technical writing positions and you can telecommute.
I have lots of technical writing and instructional design experience. I had to take 3 years off to recover from PTSD. If you know of any leads or sites for me, please let me know.
Thanks and good luck,
Gina
